There is a high demand in Toronto, and places up North. Some areas of Ontario need more technologists than others. Some positions are casual, meaning you are filling in for shifts that couldnвЂ™t be filled. Sarah: What kind of outlook do you see for the career of X-ray technology in the near future?Д®mily: There are lots of jobs available. Some provinces do not have a regulatory college, so it is different for them. Once you pass this exam, and register with the College of M.R.T.s, you are legally allowed to work in Ontario. In order to be an x-ray technologist, you have to write a national exam with the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists. Then, after completion of the clinical portion you go back to school for a six-week review and testing period. Every school structures their program differently.ДЇanshawe College is formatted into three semesters of school, and then 15 months continuous clinical placement. Most schools have already changed to this format. This, however, is changing into a four-year degree and diploma program. It is a three-year program and you graduate with a diploma. I then went from that program into the M.R.T. I had to take this program to branch out further into any of the healthcare programs such as Paramedic, Respiratory Therapy, Medical Radiation Technology (my program), Nursing, and Dental Hygiene.Д®ach program has a minimum grade you need to be eligible for the program. I took the Pre-health Science Program, which gave me a certificate. Sarah: Do you need to go through any post-secondary education for this career?Д®mily: Yes.

I would also advise them to take their Sciences in high school in order to be eligible for the program. Many hospitals will allow someone interested in the field to come in and see how the department runs for a day. Sarah: What advice do you have for someone considering becoming an X-ray technologist?Д®mily: I would advise them to try and spend some time in an Imaging department to make sure they would enjoy it. This means less time spent with the patients and a slightly stressful environment. Sarah: What is your least favorite part of your job?Д®mily: Sometimes you can be quite busy and you need to complete your exams in a timely fashion. There are always new situations and challenges that you face daily to keep things interesting. I also enjoy that it is so technology dependent, and there are always new technologies coming out that make things more interesting.

Sarah: What do you like the most about what you do?Д®mily: I enjoy working with people mostly, and also the hospital environment. It was of a 10-week duration during which time I was able to see the flow of an x-ray department, and what the job entailed. It was through a student program in which the government pays for part of your wage. I also worked at a local hospital in the Diagnostic Imaging department prior to my first year in the X-ray program. I wasnвЂ™t sure that I wanted to take the Medical Radiation Technology program at first, but after taking the Pre-health Science Program, I was fairly certain it was for me. I then found out about the Pre-health Science program offered at Fanshawe College. I knew I wanted to do something in the area of healthcare because I enjoy working with people. Sarah: What made you decide to become an X-ray technologist?Д®mily: I first found out about the program from a brochure that I got from my high school guidance counsellor. When she was eligible for employment as an x-ray technologist in Ontario, she moved to the city of Hamilton to begin a new job in her field. She received a Certificate in Pre-health Science, which allowed her to continue into the Medical Radiation Technology program at Fanshawe College.
